In December of 2000, the United Nations declared December 18 as International Migrant's Day. The day is important to highlight the rights of international migrants, who are often mistreated because of their heritage or where they come from. The day is seen as an opportunity to recognize the contributions made by millions of migrants to the economies of their countries, and secondly to promote respect for their basic human rights.
