International Day of Families

May 15 is celebrated as the International Day of Families. Often celebrated through National Family Days, this is a day to promote the awareness of issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families worldwide. In 2012 the theme was 'Ensuring work family balance.' Demographic trends towards smaller households, growing women’s labour participation, rapid urbanization and greater mobility in search of better job opportunities have resulted in excessive working hours, which reduces the time parents spend with their children and have a negative impact on family interactions. In light of these trends, supporting formal policies and practical strategies promoting reconciliation of work and care responsibilities for families is becoming an important family policy goal. 2013's theme is 'Advancing Social Integration and Inter-generational Solidarity.'
