World Book and Copyright Day

April 23 is International Book and Copyright Day, an initiative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to promote reading and the protection of ownership and property rights. This date was chosen to pay tribute to authors and the art of the written word, as April 23 is the day that both Shakespeare and Cervantes, the author of Don Quixote, passed away. The day is particularly invested with reaching out to young people around the world and encouraging them to read and write, while fostering an understanding of those who have furthered humankind with contributions through the written word.
