سبتمبر 26: European Day of Languages
September 26 was proclaimed European Day of Languages by the Council of Europe, with the support of European Union, on December 6, 2001, at the end of European Year of Languages 2001. Its aim is to encourage language learning across Europe. The general objectives of the European Day of Languages are threefold. First of all, one aim is to alert the public to the importance of language learning and diversify the range of languages learned in order to increase plurilingualism and intercultural understanding. Second, there is an emphasis on promoting the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe. Third, lifelong language learning is encouraged in and out of school.

Languages are living, evolving entities whose impact is felt not only in communication, but in the dynamics of power, cultural diversity, education and technology. Here, you can view the following slides and listen to the sounds of multilingualism on your headphones or speakers and imagine yourself being surrounded by foreign languages. This is the reality of the Internet for most non-English speakers. Each time you visit this page, you will hear the world "welcome" in a different language, from the voices of TIG members.
