International Day for Biological Diversity

Biological Diversity is the variety of life on earth, the scores of life forms from single celled bacterium to blue whales. Biological Diversity, or Biodiversity, concerns both the variety and sustainability of life in all its forms, but also the genetic integrity and health of the ecosystems in which they live and constitute. May 22 is the International Day for Biological Diversity, a day to celebrate the beauty and abundance of life on earth, and support measures to protect it from threats ranging from habitat destruction and over-harvesting, to pollution and climate change. The UN estimates that there has been an alarming 40% loss in the abundance of species worldwide between 1970 and 2000, not to speak of the losses since. The decline of Biodiversity affects us all by directly impacting our food supplies, renewable resources, medicines and the overall sustainability of the planet.
