May 31: World No Tobacco Day |
Tobacco is the second major cause of death in the world. About 5 million people die each year of tobacco related causes – this accounts to the death of one in ten adults worldwide. To draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and to the preventable death and disease it causes, the World Health Organization introduced World No Tobacco Day in 1987. It has since been celebrated on May 31. This year’s theme for World No Tobacco Day is ‘Smoke-free environments’ – it alerts us to the fact that hundreds of thousands of people who have never smoked die each year from diseases caused by breathing second-hand tobacco smoke.
